HMS HOOD COMMEMORATION SERVICE 2008 This years service will take place on Sunday 1st June
Guest preacher this year will be Reverend Philip Elston RNR who returns to Boldre twelve years after preaching at the 1996 Hood service. Rev Elston served in the Royal Navy from 1950 to 1960, at which time he transferred to Royal Navy Reserve. He was ordained in 1964 and commissioned as a Chaplain RNR. His naval career included service in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic and in home waters. He was later attached for seven years to the British Army training team in Malawi. Until recently he was Corps Chaplain of the Sea Cadet Corps.
This has always been a very well attended service and it is recommended you arrive in plenty of time to ensure you get a seat. Refreshments will be served afterwards when you may have the opportunity to chat with some of the Hood veterans.
Ted Briggs is the only living survivor of the Hoods sinking. He proudly carried the Hood Banner and read a prayer at the service.
Beautiful flower displays are created by our team of floral volunteers. Donations for the flower fund are always welcomed.
Commander AA Pearse gave the sermon, which he had kept in a drawer for many years ready to be use in emergencies if a guest speaker could not attend one of the Hood services that he had been arranging for the last 13 years.
After his sermon Camilla presented him with a gift and flowers for his wife as this is the last Hood service he is arranging. Nigel Henley will be taking over for the 2008 service.
Bishop Paul was at St Johns Church to both baptise and confirm a number of adults and children. More pictures can be seen here.
The memorial to HMS Hood is permanently located directly opposite the main entrance to St. Johns Church. This area is rededicated each year as part of this annual service.
You can learn more about this HMS Hood memorial in the Church History section. Or by visiting the HMS Hood web site.
