Minutes of meeting of PCC for St Mary the Virgin Church, South Baddesley, 20th January 2009 at St Mary's Church.
Present: Chairman: Steve Vincent, Churchwarden: Andy Ward Also Bernard Atkinson, Ted Cantrell, Eva Evans, Felicity Pellow (Secretary), John Vernon, Nicholas Walford (Treasurer), David Woodgates, Alan Wooldridge
Apologies: Beth Canterell, Veronica Mackay and Malcolm Ross
The meeting began with a prayer led by Lynda.
The Minutes of the last meeting of the PCC on 20th November 2008 were accepted with two minor amendments and signed by Steve Vincent.
Matters Arising from the Minutes
1 Children Ted reported that the Christingle had been well attended. The oranges were decorated by the schoolchildren this year and this helped to encourage them into St Mary's for this lovely service. It helped to make them feel more involved with their church. The crib service was also well attended. Ted pointed out that the space between the pews could attribute to a fire risk. The PCC then discussed the possibility of moving out the front two pews but moving the responds back to the next pews. The PCC agreed that this would benefit the services attended by the school and also visiting musicians - i.e. Ytenerants - when more space would be much appreciated.
Action: A de minimus faculty must be sought to carry out this change. Felicity will contact Adrian Harbidge.
Ted, Alan and Eva have been in consultation with Mary Nugent and it has been suggested that the school takes over the organisation of a Family Service in July, bringing their own prayers, readings and songs. It was agreed that a copy of their songbook be purchased so that Leo and our other organists can accompany them.
It was also proposed that a change of time from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Family Services might be tried out for a short period to see if families respond, thus avoiding football, rugby, dancing activities that are very often held on Sunday mornings.
The chairman thanked Ted, Alan and Eva for this positive step forward. As it is one of our Mission Audit requirements to develop our links with the children of South Baddesley School, we are keen to make progress.
2 Reorganisation of Services
This is now in place. Lynda informed us that the Mothering Day service will be a Family Service.
3 Good Friday Walk Ted provided a map of the planned route. Neil Smart has suggested that the first part of the walk, as far as St Nicholas Pilley should be children orientated. It looks as if this will be a thoroughly good venture, sharing the whole day with our new friends at Brockenhurst.
4 Treasurer's Report Nicholas was delighted to report that fundraising is up by £1000. See separate report. Planned giving is also higher this year.
5 AOB All who attended Hugh Wilson's Memorial Service agreed it was a very happy and enjoyable occasion. He was treasurer for many years at St Mary's. All Hugh's grandchildren participated in the service. One of his cousins led the service. At the end he encouraged all present to contribute to St Mary's by placing contributions in the yellow envelopes. So apart from the £1000 legacy, St Mary's benefited enormously from the congregation's contributions.
It was agreed that we should encourage non-regulars to use the yellow envelopes at other services. Nicholas reminded us that the parish share is going up again, by 5% this time.
Lynda has been asked by Bishop Paul to stay on until our new House for Duty Priest arrives (probably July). She has agreed to do this. The whole PCC was delighted with this news, and gave her many thanks.
Possible new members for election in April. Leo Gibb, Pat Mennie, George Mills, and Clifford Jakes will be approached.
The meeting ended by sharing The Grace .
Next meetings: 31st March 2009 21st April 2009 (APM).
